July 7-11, 2008
Future Scholars 2008 is for ninth and tenth graders who want find out what college is all about while living at SOU for one week this summer, July 7-11,2008. Participants will explore a broad range of college preparatory classes and lectures combined with cultural events and recreational activities.
Students will stay on the Southern Oregon University Ashland campus, interacting with other high school students from around the state. Participants will learn SAT test-taking techniques and how to locate colleges, write an essay and apply for college admission. We will also provide students financial aid information and instruction in conducting scholarship searches.
TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FUTURE SCHOLARS PROGRAM, A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT MUST:
- Complete grade 9 or 10 in June 2008.
- Be motivated to explore the possibilities of higher education.
A COMPLETED APPLICATION PACKET MUST CONTAIN:
- APPLICATION FORM
- CURRENT GRADE REPORTS
- THE STUDENT STATEMENT: A one-page essay written by the student discussing his/her long-range education and career goals and what he/she needs to learn to achieve them. Statement should be 250 to 350 words, printed in 12 point font size.
SELECTION: We accept applications as long as space remains available. We will notify applicants of acceptance by mail.
Scholarships GEAR-UP: If your school is identified as an Oregon GEAR-UP school, there are 25 scholarships available and tuition is only $25. Spaces will be filled on a first come first served basis. Students must be nominated by a teacher, principal or school counselor.
