Life Drawing and Portraiture

Conquer the Essay
Ages 15-18, Four sessions
Saturdays, February 2-23, 10:30 am-noon
You can boost your score on the SAT timed essay or enhance your college entrance essay. You will build a knowledge bank of specific examples from history, literature, and personal experience and apply this as you practice writing solid essays in an allotted amount of time for a variety of topics. You will develop confidence in your writing, strengthen vocabulary and grammar, increase reading comprehension, improve critical/creative thinking skills and expand descriptive writing abilities.

SAT Prep
Ages 15-18
On your mark, get set, SUCCEED! This SAT prep class will provide you with effective strategies for answering both verbal and math questions and hone writing skills for the current version of the SAT test. You will also learn about test anxiety control, time management tips, and test taking secrets that will help you have a positive SAT experience. NOTE: Textbook is included in the course fee.

The college search and admissions process can be confusing and stressful, but it doesn't have to be that way. From finding the right college to better understanding the financial aid process and learning scholarships and essay writing tips, this seminar will help you navigate the whole process. People Photography

Come explore the world of digital photography while you learn how to take pictures of people. You will explore the elements of a successful photograph—brightness, contrast and uniqueness of images. Learn how to upload images into the computer and manipulate photos. You will also visit Orville’s Photography Studio in downtown Ashland and see first hand how a professional studio works for portraiture. NOTE: Bring your camera and pictures on CD if you have any.

Take part in Apple’s music creation software as you learn the essentials of GarageBand, a program that has over 1,000 pre-recorded loops, tracks for live recordings, and effects like reverb and panning. You will learn proper etiquette for handshaking practices, eye contact, body language, proper table manners, conflict resolution skills and cultural communication skills. Learn the importance of RSVP’s and thank you notes. Participate in a tutorial lunch that provides the opportunity to practice your new skills at an Ashland restaurant. Steel rings on steel—away you go into the fascinating world of swordplay. Safe inside a mask and jacket you will be introduced to the exciting sport of fencing. Learn to climb like a pro on the University’s indoor rock wall. You will learn the basics of knot-tying, belaying techniques, climbing safety and proper rope skills. Then take your adventurous skills on the water as you learn to Kayak and do other exciting water sports at SOU’s pool.

Pop Bottle Rocketry
Ages 6-8, Two sessions
Saturdays, March 8 and 15, 1:00-2:30 pm

Build and launch your own rocket while you explore the laws of physics. Work with the classmates to graph your results so you can determine the optimal water to air ratio, then make adjustments to your rocket to achieve a more spectacular launch.

Birds of a Feather

Learn about the birds in your backyard through fun, interactive games. Examine skins, collect and analyze field data and spend time as a family spotting our local feathered friends and you visit the Klamath Bird Observatory’s headquarters. Practice mist netting and learn what these birds are telling us about our ecosystem.

Experience the world of veterinary medicine and learn what it takes to be a vet. You will learn the basics of animal health care including nutrition, preventing diseases with vaccines and ways to diagnose diseases in pets. You will also learn about the many treatment options for diseases and injury like surgery and medical therapy.

Wildlife Forensics

Explore the world of animal forensics. Find out how investigators find a few scraps of evidence such as a drop of blood, feather, or a few bones to piece the story together. Learn about the types of prohibited animal products and the laws that protect them. You will examine confiscated contraband such as fur coats, leather hides, feathered headdresses, and carved ivory.

If you’ve enjoyed CSI then you will love this class! Take your skills to the next level as you dig a little deeper as a crime scene investigator. Learn actual forensic science techniques such as forensic anthropology, computer forensics, ballistics, drug and poison analysis, blood analysis, forensic pathology, forensic entomology, hair and fiber analysis, criminal profiling, evidence collection, and more.

Instructor Bios

Rachel Andras is a FFF Certified Casting Instructor with over ten years of experience and is regarded as one of the most skilled female anglers in the nation.

Sophia Chu has a bachelor's in mathematics and a master's in teaching from SOU. She is currently teaching math courses at North Medford High School.

Marla Corbin has spent twelve years playing golf and six years teaching with a focus on junior golfers of all ages in Medford.

Teresa Francois has a master’s in art education from the Univ. of New Mexico and has taught in youth programs and public schools.

Orville Hector has a bachelor’s in art from SOU, is a well known local professional photographer and is the photo editor for the Ashland Daily Tidings.

Cynthia Hewitt has a bachelor’s in social ecology/child development from U.C. Irvine and has taught workshops and seminars throughout the valley.

Craig Honeycutt has a master’s in art education and is a local artist with more than twenty years teaching experience.

Shawna Huggins is a trained and certified scorer for the new SAT writing section and has over twenty years of teaching experience.

Chris Johnson has an associates degree in Photography, is an avid outdoor enthusiast and is a river guide for Kokopelli River Center in Ashland.

Jan Lippen-Holtz has a bachelor’s degree from Berkeley and is a consultant for College Planning Consultants and has been an educator for 25 years.

Robert Luaders is an SOU graduate and a energetic computer guru who blends technology with the artistry of life. He is an award-winning vocalist, film composer, and songwriter

John McDougall is all-star fencer who trained with world-class masters.

Melissa Molzahn is an AmeriCorps Education Specialist for Klamath Bird Observatory and was a naturalist educator for the National Park Service.

Dr. Ellen Siem is an Assistant Professor of Physics at SOU. She has a BS from Northwestern University and a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Alice Sievers has a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University, and currently owns and practices at Bear Creek Animal Clinic.

Dan Snell  is a senior at SOU majoring in economics and is a Defensive All-American on SOU’s Lacrosse Team.

Rick Stinchcomb has been a teaching pro for fourteen years and has taught for eleven years at Eugene’s Fiddlers Green and recently relocated to Ashland.

Jenny Welburn has a BA in English and a master's degree in education from Lewis and Clark College. She is currently teaching English at South Medford High School.

Bonnie Yates has been a forensic scientist at the National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Lab for 14 years. She was also a zoo archaeologist and a specialized scientist devoted to interpreting bones from the Ice Age to old pioneer days. She has a M.S. in Environmental Resources and Archaeozoology from the University of North Texas.
