Pre-College/Youth Programs

High School Brain Bowl

Master Brain Bowl is the premier competition at the high school level. Teams generally include juniors and seniors who have competed on previous teams. The winning team from the regional competition has the opportunity to compete in a national competition with teams from the entire nation. Master Brain Bowl was held on Saturday, February 23, 2008.

Freshman/Sophomore Brain Bowl competition is limited to high school freshmen and sophomores. Questions are tailored to prepare these rookie teams for the high level of competitiveness required for Master Brain Bowl. Freshman/Sophomore Brain Bowl was held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008.

2008 High School Brain Bowl Results

This year's 31st Annual Southern Oregon Brain Bowl Competition’s had a total of 45 teams participating in three levels of Brain Bowl from schools in Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath counties. Brain Bowl is sponsored by the Southern Oregon Educational Service District (SOESD) and coordinated by SOU Pre- College Youth Programs.

 

The final matches were played and broadcast live on Southern Oregon Public Television KSYS, Channel 8, and on Rogue Valley Community Television. Dr. Curt Bacon, SOU Professor in the Business Department, served as moderator for the Middle School, Freshman/Sophomore and semi-final high school Masters Brain Bowl matches; Tim Egan, teacher at Talent Middle School, served as moderator for the second semi-final high school Masters and Championship Brain Bowl games. The SOU Youth Programs Coordinator for the High School Brain Bowl competitions were Bill and Kim Gabriel, and the Middle School Brain Bowl coordinator was Jan Lippen-Holtz.

 


Freshman/Sophomore Division

North Medford High School and Crater High School played off for the Freshman/Sophomore Championship. North defeated Crater to become the Freshman/Sophomore Brain Bowl champ for 2008!

Masters Division

Semi-Final High School

The first match for the semi-final High School Masters Brain Bowl division was between Ashland Blue Team and Ashland Red Team.  Ashland’s Red Team won the match 49 to 19. The second semi–final match for the Masters Division was between Grants Pass High School and North Medford High SchoolGrants Pass won the match 40 to 35 to go on to play in the Champion round against Ashland.

Championship

Ashland High School beat Grants Pass High School 52 to 49, making them the Masters Brain Bowl Champion of Southern Oregon for 2008!
