March 2012

This year marks the 101th anniversary of International Women’s Day! Ashland’s
Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WLPF), together with many
other organizations, is sponsoring a celebration in the Plaza.

Since 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City
to demand shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights, women have
joined in solidarity to recognize the contributions of women past
and present, and to work for a better future for all women. In 1975
the United Nations officially endorsed IWD and it has become more
popular each year. Last year 64 countries joined in the festivities
and over a thousand events were held across the globe.

Our local celebration of International Women’s Day was moved to the Ashland Plaza last year and was a great success. The celebration features music, entertainers, puppets and information about famous women.
