Jim Giancarlo, Professional Faculty

Musical Theatre

Jim Giancarlo began teaching at SOU in 1991. He has established a sequence of classes in musical theatre, including dance, history, auditioning and musical theatre workshop which now form the core of the minor in musical theatre. He's directed and choreographed a number of SOU productions, including Sweet Charity, Cabaret, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Urinetown.

Giancarlo is also the owner and artistic director of Ashland's successful Oregon Cabaret Theatre where, in addition to directing and choreographing more than 80 productions, he has written book and lyrics for a dozen original musicals.

He was a dancer, actor and choreographer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for six seasons and has directed and choreographed at many West Coast theatres, including Portland Repertory Theatre, PCPA Theatrefest and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. In addition to overseeing the musical theatre minor, Giancarlo also teaches a course in choreographing for musical theatre in SOU's Master of Theatre Studies summer graduate program. He holds a BFA from State University of New York College at Buffalo.
