Sustainability Initiatives Being Implemented at Southern Oregon University
- A 55-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system will be installed at the Higher Education Center in the summer of 2009.
- Two of the four boilers in the Central Heat Plant have been replaced with energy-efficient boilers. The replacement of the other two boilers will be bid in May 2009 and completed by September 2010.
- The existing buried diesel fuel tank at the Central Heat Plant has been decommissioned.
- Eleven remaining manual irrigation systems on campus are being replaced with automatic irrigation systems to reduce water consumption.
- In the recent seating replacement project for the Music Building’s Recital Hall, 463 existing auditorium seats were donated to regional organizations for re-use.
- In the Mulkey Auditorium Remodel in Churchill Hall, 144 existing auditorium seats were donated to regional organizations for re-use.
- Energy-efficient lighting will be installed in 13 laboratories and classrooms in the Science Building in the summer of 2009.
- Energy-efficient lighting has been installed in a lecture hall (Room 150) and a classroom (Room 195) in the Education/Psychology Building.
- As part of the Central Hall Roof Replacement project, additional roof insulation will be installed.
- Timers have been installed on the lighting at the University’s largest parking lot (#34) and at Lot #36 on Mountain Avenue to reduce energy consumption.
- A high-efficiency heat pump system is being installed at Campus Public Safety to replace the existing electric wall heaters.
- Seven variable frequency drives are being replaced in Central Hall, Britt Hall, McNeal Pavilion and the Science Building.
- Facilities Management & Planning is implementing a Green Housekeeping Program.
- Energy audits will be conducted on the following buildings:
- Central Hall
- McNeal Hall
- Cascade Residence Hall
- Greensprings Residence Hall
- Madrone Residence Hall
