Meese Auditorium

Join us in learning about the largest landfill in the world in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and how there can be beauty and life that comes from even the ugliest of places. Light snacks will be served from 5:30-6:00. After the film take part in a discussion about the topics addressed in the film, and enjoy the art on display of SOU students and Ashland community members.

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives.

1st Annual Raider ReclamationRaider Reclamation Logo

June 13th - June 15th

Thank you for helping us to divert more than 5,600 pounds of materials from the landfill! Through SOU's partnership with the Goodwill, all items collected will contribute to job training and placement services in our local community.

SOU Full Circle Recycling and Southern Oregon Goodwill are partnering to host SOU's first annual Raider Reclamation, a residence hall move-out waste diversion event. Each year during residence hall move-outs, tons of recyclable and reusable items are dumped in the trash, then trucked to the landfill. During SOU's annual Raider Reclamation, collection stations will be staged in campus residence halls to collect move-out waste from students before they reach the dumpster. These items will then be donated to Southern Oregon Goodwill, contributing to the creation of jobs and career development opportunities for underprivileged individuals in our community.

We need you in order to make this a success! Sign up for a volunteer shift for Raider Reclamation. Volunteers will work at one of the 6 collection stations on campus to sort materials into bins to be collected by Goodwill or taken to SOU's Recycling Center. Volunteers will be treated to a free pre-event training with pizza and refreshments!
