Energy & Resource Conservation Measures in the Residence Halls
Facilities Management & Planning is now charging Student Housing and the other auxiliary enterprises for their utilities (natural gas, electricity and water) based on actual consumption data. Submeters have been installed in all campus buildings to accurately measure the consumption of steam condensate, electricity, and water. This change benefits some auxiliaries (such as the Stevenson Union and the Student Health & Wellness Center), but it has a negative financial impact on Student Housing. To reduce this negative financial impact on Student Housing, Greg McKown of Student Housing and Jared Fuhriman of FMP have been tasked with implementing energy conservation measures in the residence halls. Among the energy and resource conservation measures that are being implemented are the following:
- Installation of low-flow shower heads in all of the Residence Halls.
- Performance of twice yearly preventive maintenance on heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment.
- Re-insulation of joints and connections on steam lines where asbestos-containing insulation has been removed.
- Installation of occupancy sensors for lighting control where feasible.
- Adjusting temperature set points to the University standard.
