2014 Application Information -- Deadline March 3, 2014
If you are applying to be a Master's candidate, you will need to complete two applications:
1. The first is the online SOU graduate application*. It requires an application fee and official sealed transcripts from ALL universities previously attended (even if credit from one institution was transferred to another). Official Transcripts are to be sent directly to the Admissions office, do not send to the Summer Language Institute. Please note: although GRE scores are requested on this form, our program does not require them. Also, although you will be asked about your state residency, out of state tuition does not apply to our program. All students pay the same rate (see below).
*Please be sure you DO NOT complete the application for Graduate International Students.
2. The second form is the Summer Language Institute (SLI) Application. Send it in with two signed letters of recommendation that address your teaching and language experience and a statement of your educational philosophy. In addition, to demonstrate your Spanish language proficiency, all candidates must submit a copy of an ACTFL certified oral proficiency interview rating. To set up your ACTFL interview, follow this link and fill out the appropriate application form. The process to set up the interview and receive the results can take several weeks, so you should begin as soon as possible.
Applications must be postmarked by March 3, 2014. Applications submitted after this date are subject to a $30 late fee.
If you are applying as a non-Master's student, complete the SLI non-MA application and send it in with your application fee, unofficial transcripts and ACTFL OPI rating. Note: Non-MA students do not qualify for financial aid. If you would like to apply for financial aid, you will need to apply either as a Master's degree candidate or as a Postbaccalaureate candidate (only students approved by SLI program Director may be considered a Post-baccalaureate candidate).
We will mail acceptance letters in March. At that time we will send information regarding housing and course registration along with travel insurance and liability forms that you must complete. An initial tuition deposit of $500 is due April 11, 2014. Full balance of tuition and fees is due May 12, 2014.
The program is limited to 22 participants per cohort. Master's candidates must be currently teaching Spanish at the middle school, high school or community college level and must have taught for one year.
NOTE: At this point, you are simply submitting an application. Submitting an application is not a guarantee of admission. All applications will be reviewed by the SLI Selection Committee and successful candidates will be notified via mail.
Students are expected to take 8 credits per session. An initial tuition deposit of $500 is due April 11. Full balance of tuition and fees is due May 12.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Only master's candidates are eligible for financial aid. In order to receive financial aid, you must fill out the current year FAFSA. This will determine if you are eligible for financial aid and if so, how much aid you are eligible to receive. Since this is a Master's program, only federal loans (not direct grants) are available. Alternative loans (loans that the Oregon University system gives to students) may also be available. Money is not dispersed until the first day of class. Information about financial aid and the FAFSA is located at http://www.sou.edu/enrollment/financial-aid.
Please note, because SLI students are only enrolled as fulltime graduate students during the summer, their loans will go into repayment 6 months after taking classes. Students then begin making the few monthly repayments until they are enrolled again the next summer. At that time, students should provide their loan provider with proof of enrollment by following the "Enrollment Verification" process found on the SOU Enrollment Services "Quicklinks" toolbar. Loan payments will be deferred again for the second and third summer, then resume after those summer terms are over. Making some payments on loans in-between school helps keep the total amount owed plus interest down. There are 3 or 4 plans to choose from, with the standard plan being 10 years to pay back your student loans.
The program also has a small but growing scholarship pool specifically for Master's degree candidates in the Summer Language Institute for Spanish Teachers. To apply for this scholarship, click on the link below, complete the application form and accompanying documents, and send by email, fax, or regular mail to Anne Connor, Director (mailing information is on the form.). Note that the scholarship is based on both financial need and merit. A FAFSA form (as indicated above) is required to be considered for financial need. Scholarship applications are due March 7. No decisions on scholarships will be made until after that date.
Since our scholarshiop pool is small, we encourage students to apply for other forms of financial aid as well. Good sources for past students have been professional development grants from their high schools, school districts, or state language associations, and/or federal grants, such as the TEACH grant.
There is a scholarship opportunity for AATSP members. Deadline for this scholarship is December 31, 2013. Click HERE for more information about the scholarship and how to apply.
