Yotes Score Early Goal Ending Raiders Soccer Season

Still riding high from the program's first post-season win, the SOU Women’s soccer team couldn’t produce another magical moment as they fell to the College of Idaho Wednesday night.

The Yotes took care of the Raiders with a 1-0 victory.

The match got off to a quick start with College of Idaho getting on the scoreboard 1-0 only 30 seconds into the match. A quick cross pass to the middle setup Yotes player, Mandy Greif, who slammed the ball low into the net and past Raiders goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwien.

Somewhat stunned by the early goal, the Raiders tried to find a way back into the match with winger Denise Powell coming close twice and defender Stacy Szeto testing the Yotes goalkeeper.

Solid midfield play by Mo Costello and Stacy Hamer kept the Raiders in contention for an equalizer while, Auika Muragin, Stefani Vert and Dianne Uehara’s defense kept the C of I offense at bay.

Even with the quick goal, the game was very much a midfield battle. It was C of I however that seemed to be more likely to double their lead than the Raiders were of equalizing.

As the game came to a close, it was obvious that the defeat was not the result the Raiders were looking for but they had every reason to be proud of their performance.

With defeat ending their season, the Raiders still have many positives to look back on. Fielding a young squad, the Raiders have more than proved their worth this season with the programs first post season win being the main highlight.

“Well I think it’s obviously a feather in the cap for this group” said Coach Jon Clement. “Post-season wins are often determined by the more experienced team, so for a young side to get one on the road in very difficult conditions is great.”

Consisting of 13 freshmen, six sophomores and one junior and senior, the Raiders end an incredible season for such a young team and the ambitions of the team have no limits.

“Always, the goals include winning the conference, getting to the national tournament,” said Coach Clement. “But further still it’s about continuing academic success, getting better on the field, broadening our regional and national reputation and obviously having a blast.”

The Raiders future looks bright and next season should hold even more success for a team that knows no limits.
