William Kolacek, former SOU residential life director turned himself in last Monday after allegedly embezzling $48,000 from the school and defrauding an Ashland branch of U.S. Bank for $13,000.

Evidence of embezzlement first came to light when a routine SOU internal audit found inconsistencies and unauthorized purchases. Kolacek, 35, resigned on March 5, the day the audit began, and he now faces four counts of aggravated first-degree theft. Three of the counts are individual thefts from the university; each one of at least $10,000 police stated in an April 1 Mail Tribune article. The fourth count alleges defrauding of U.S. Bank.

Ashland police stated in the Mail Tribune article that Kolacek is suspected of depositing a check for $12,847 into a U.S. Bank account and then withdrawing the cash knowing the check would bounce.

Few details about the case have yet to be released to the public.

"We know where the money went, but I can’t talk about that," said Ashland police Detective Bon Stewart in an April 1 Mail Tribune article.

"We are not supposed to say anything about this case as it is still in the judicial system, and we don’t want to compromise the integrity of that [trial]," said Christine Cook-Florence, executive director of marketing and communications.

Formerly a housing and dining complex director for Eastern Illinois University, Kolacek gained employment with SOU in July 2007.

Kolacek was lodged in Jackson County Jail until earlier last week. Court dates have not been set.
