Welcome Southern Oregon University Veterans!

This page is for Veterans of the United States Armed Forces and their dependents. Veterans and their dependents may be eligible to receive Educational Benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or the Oregon National Guard Offices. This online information should answer your questions when coming to SOU, as well as how to apply for Educational Benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

On the SOU Ashland Campus, the Veterans Resource Office works closely with students to help with the VA Education process, among many other duties. If your questions are not answered here, please contact any of the student veterans at the Veteran's Resource Office: Joe Munoz, Kirby Rider, or Scott Williams for additional information or assistance at 541-552-6107. Also, feel free to stop by and visit, a VRO staff member is available Monday-Friday 9:30 to 1:00

Veterans must request VA certification each term (including summer sessions). You should contact the SOU Veterans Certifying Official at the Enrollment Services Center (Britt Hall) for upcoming terms. They will certify your enrollment and forward the request to the regional VA Office in Muskogee, Oklahoma for processing. The VA determines eligibility for Educational Benefits in all cases.

The Veterans Resource Office (VRO)  is located in the Commuter Resource Center in the Stevenson Union. We offer a space dedicated as a meeting and study space for veterans. Our friendly and knowledgeable student staff will assist you in interpreting your benefits and provide both local and campus resources.

The Veterans Resource Office is also home to the Student Veterans Association, the on-campus Veterans Club. Currently the SVA has more than 35 student-veterans and military supporters who work closely with our community groups and school officials on behalf of all student veterans.

Benefit Updates:

Chapter 1606 or 1607 Benefits expiring soon?

If your Chapter 1606 or 1607 benefits are going to expire in the next year, you could be eligible for up to a 12-month extention through the new Chapter 33 Benefits.

To sign-up, locate the exact date your benefits will expire (Normally this will be at the end of a term). You should be getting paperwork at the beginning of each term that notifies you of your remaining benefits. Fill out a new VONAPP around two months before the expiration date and submit any follow up paperwork.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the start date for your Chapter 33 benefits is the day after your 1606 or 1607 end date that was found above. If you start the benefits before this end date, you will only receive Chapter 33 benefits for the remaining time you had on the previous program.
