Apply when you have completed:

·         at least 48 quarter credits (about four quarters or three semesters from other institutions)

·         ANTH213, SOC204 & SOC205 or the equivalent coursework from other institutions

·         Colloquium (writing & speech requirements if transfer students)

·         Quantitative Reasoning requirement (MATH243 or EC232 or equivalent coursework from other institutions)

 

NOTE:  Failure to remain in good standing in the college or to make sufficient progress in the major will result in cancellation of acceptance to the sociology major.  Reapplication will be required to regain admitted status

 

Application checklist:

Review the requirements for the sociology major in the SOU Catalog.

Complete this application form and staple to it the other required material.

Attach a copy of transcripts from SOU and from any prior institutions. If you transferred to SOU, attach a copy of your Advanced Standing Report (ASR) as well as copies of transcripts from your previous institutions.

Attach a 1 page, typed personal statement describing why you wish to be a sociology major and how it relates to your personal educational and career goals. 

Complete ANTH213, SOC204 & SOC205 (or transfer equivalent)  with a 2.7 (B-) average grade.

Complete Colloquium and Quantitative Reasoning general education requirements or the equivalents for transfer students (see reverse).

Attach a written plan for completing any remaining general education requirements (see reverse)

Mail the completed information to the Department Chair or give it to any sociology faculty member.

Provisional acceptance is possible if the student has the required GPA but is missing one other requirements, as long as an acceptable plan is in place for completing that work.

 

You will be notified of the department’s decision by email (or by U.S. Mail if you have no access to email).

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee your admission.

Exceptions to the above criteria may be petitioned to the Department of Sociology/Anthropology.
