Sociology and Anthropology
Welcome
Sociological and anthropological perspectives uncover assumptions about social and cultural arrangements. As a joint department, we offer training in the distinctive concepts and methods specific to the disciplines of sociology and anthropology. We also collaborate on the exploration of social forces, social organization and cultural diversity from a holistic point of view.

OUR MISSION
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology embraces two complementary social science majors that are committed to understanding the interdependence of personal and global experience. In our teaching and research, we focus on civic engagement and social justice. We are student centered, regionally focused, but also nationally and internationally engaged. Our programs:
- provide conceptual tools to analyze the complex interplay of structural, multicultural, and historical forces which shape individual lives, our communities, region and wider world.
- maintain strong ties to regional organizations in social services, cultural and natural resource management, public policy, education, and historic preservation as well as national, state, local, and tribal governments.
- provide instruction and mentoring that effectively prepare students to understand human experience, the dynamics of social life, and the cultural assumptions and values that influence social interaction.
Our department and faculty support and adhere to University policies and procedures. Please refer to the Student Affairs website, http://www.sou.edu/studentaffairs/, for information regarding standards of academic honesty, grading grievences, discrimination, sexual harassment, and the student code of conduct.
