Proper Health and Physical Education

Mikel Brunner

Proper Health and physical education is something that is overlooked in our culture today. As a result, alarming trends in childhood obesity, behavioral issues, ability to focus, and other extreme issues, even among preschool children have re-focused my attention on the importance of physical activity in this age group. The purpose of my community based learning project was to introduce fun and challenging types of physical fitness and better overall health and well being, specifically to children between the ages two and five. I researched and designed a program of fitness specifically focussed on children during their early years. From this project I learned the vital importance of influencing interest in physical activity required to promote healthy physical, cognitive, emotional and social development at a young age. Specifically, I focused on the interaction between physical activity and motor skill development appropriate to the students current levels of development. Applying the fun and challenging activities in everyday classroom settings, would help address the issues of overlooking and undermining proper health and physical education.
