Whole Brain Teaching

Erin Pope-Morton

Attention! Attention! Attention! Capturing and maintaining students' attention in our current society is a challenge, yet educators are required to do this on a daily basis; little learning can take place with a wandering mind. Authentic educators are persistently seeking best practices to implement in the classroom to do just this. Whole Brain Teaching is one of the fastest growing educational reform movements. It is a teaching system that is a strategy driven, student centered form of classroom management that creates an encouraging and fun educational environment for both students and teachers! During my pre-service experience I implemented various Whole Brain Teaching strategies in the classroom which resulted in students becoming highly engaged and motivated to learn. While implementing my unit of study I challenged my students to strive for exceptional academic feats. I created Whole Brain lessons that incorporated humor and movement which generated cross brain connections that solidified learning and deepened understanding. There are many levels to Whole Brain Teaching and so I would encourage educators to implement strategies slowly and in a consistence pace. Whole Brain Teaching is just a vehicle which assists educators in preparing students for succeeding in the society they manifest.
