Feeding the Rogue Valley by Increasing Salmon and Steelhead Returns

Chris Shelton

By far one the largest issues facing the world today is hunger, unfortunately this issue is also one that is affecting communities in the Rogue Valley. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife have occasionally donated excess salmon and steelhead that have returned to the Cole Rivers Hatchery to local food banks in the Rogue Valley. I reviewed several reliable sources of information in order to determine how much fish is donated on an annual basis and how these donations affect local communities. The results I gathered showed large amounts of fresh fish being donated not just in the Rogue Valley, but all over the state of Oregon and having a huge positive impact on local communities.
