Fungi perform a crucial role in natural ecosystems by cycling nutrients and decomposing organic debris, but harvesting their fruit bodies is a prominent human activity. The majority of the harvested fruit bodies are mycorrhizal fungi, which are symbiotically beneficial to some tree species. Commercial harvesting of wild edible mushrooms is burgeoning and its effects are of concern for ecologists and land managers. This literature research project poster presents the possible harvesting impacts in relationship to future fruit yields, species richness, damage to soil mycelia, and other forest impacts.
