Genetically modified organisms (or GMOs) have been in existence over the last few decades, but until recently they were merely an afterthought in the mind of consumers and environmental activists. Genetically modified organisms, and in particular genetically modified foods, have almost suddenly become an extremely controversial issue. GMOs are now a part of our everyday life, but what do we really know about them? Some researchers believe that GMOs can have a negative influence on the environment. Not only affecting vegetation, but the surrounding organisms -- and the environment -- as well. Although it is true that GMOs have been beneficial in some regards, that does not mean there are no downsides to them; in fact, it is unlikely that all of the effects GMOs cause are known -- which indicates that we should be cautious about their use/effects.
