In the United States, growing consumer demand for organic food has influenced big changes in market and supply chains. As our awareness of environmental benefits associated with organic production grows, so does consumer concern for the ingestion of herbicides and pesticides. The USDA organic label is well-known. However, getting their organic sticker may cost from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The certification process consists of an application fee, annual renewal fee, assessment on annual production or sales, and inspection fees. Many studies recognize the environmental benefits of organic food. Many illustrate growth in the organic food market. But few tell us about the benefits and barriers farmers are faced with when going through the certification process. What are the financial benefits to Jackson County farmers of organic certification, and how long will it take to see these benefits? I will look into recent, peer-reviewed studies to find the motivating factors, benefits, and barriers that farmers experience when going through this process, which will provide support for further possible research into the socioeconomic factors influencing organic certification in Jackson County.
