Soil Productivity as an Indicator of Food Security

Jeff Wilcox

This project explores the ramifications of poor and degraded soils as related to the issue of Food Security. According to the World Bank, only 18% of US soil is currently arable, understanding the unique qualities that productive land must posses, it becomes important to ask weather modern industrial farming techniques are sustainable. Productive soil today may not necessarily be available for future generations if it is not maintained. Tilling practices, microbe content and the usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will all be explored for their potential implications on future crop yields. The scope of this research will extend beyond our borders, however special attention will be payed to soil types, health and productivity in the Rogue Valley as well.
