The aim of this project was to assess neighborhood strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the health of the children residing in the area surrounding Washington Elementary School and identify short and long term interventions that might be used to improve the lives of those children. Treatment and prevention models involving community participation, education, and active involvement are necessary to achieve results in implementing sustainable change. Data collected from stakeholder interviews, tours of the neighborhood, and student BMI assessments indicate the presence of both a food desert and low levels of health literacy exist at this time. The staff members at this school have been issued funding for implementation of a well-known and utilized educational program to lower the childhood obesity rate for their students and their families. The long term intervention chosen is to establish a community garden within the borders of our neighborhood to improve community nutrition, physical activity, health literacy, and enhance food security.
