Youth for Christ (YFC) is a faith-based organization that serves in local communities offering youth a place to become mentored in their faith, life struggles, and successes. The presenter saw the opportunity to be a part of YFC's vision by supporting a reading and journal program that promotes literacy, critical thinking, and discussion. The after school program was implemented weekly, by the presenter, with seven volunteer students. Students received a journal entry form asking them to read specific sections of faith-based reading material, and write what they learned along with any questions on the reading. Students were given a week to complete each journal and meet with the presenter to discuss what they had learned. There was a five-dollar reward for each completed journal in which the students could save for future YFC camps or for personal use. At the presenter's surprise, the students demonstrated money management skills by saving the majority of their money for future camps. At the end of the project, students developed in their self-reflections, opinions, and consistency of reading outside of school material. The presenter learned that with accountability and strong support one can promote lifelong readers and life skills that carry on into adulthood.
