A Fresh Start: Building Resiliency in At-Risk Families

Colleen R. Biller

The Family Nurturing Center (FNC), Jackson County Children's Relief Nursery, is a non-profit organization in Medford, OR that was designed to assist children who are considered to be highly at risk. Since its creation in 2006, this program has supported the prevention of child abuse, while offering constructive family intervention for the parents. In order to enhance the quality of life for these families, FNC provides support for children ranging from several weeks old to 5 years old through therapeutic early education/intervention, home visits, parenting classes and interactive therapy. These types of services were created with the intent of dramatically reducing the patterns of abuse and neglect in families. With the knowledge and interest of this organization's philosophy in mind, the presenter obtained an internship position in both the toddler classroom setting (ages 2-3), and the pre-school classroom setting (ages 4-5) as her community based learning project. During the internship, the presenter performed worked directly with the children through creative and free play, constructive behavior modification, positive reinforcement, and various therapeutic techniques. Through the intensive internship process, the presenter has become deeply aware of the innate resiliency in children, and their ability to always bounce back and start fresh.
