The goal of my project was to help children in my community. I became acquainted with a crisis intervention program that provides women and children with support and advocacy after suffering domestic violence, and realized this would be the perfect opportunity to serve. I chose this because I could no longer stand knowing that violence goes on in my community, and that I was not helping in some capacity to make a difference. One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Children that witness violence between parents have the highest risk of becoming abusers themselves. Abuse and violence rob children of so much. I can help change this by sharing my time with these children, and I am willing to stand alongside of them to be a supportive presence in their lives, even if just for a brief moment. My main activity has been to act as a Youth Services volunteer, and provide support and encouragement to children. By giving my time and experience I am contributing to the reduction of the negative impacts of abuse. This program creates a community for abuse survivors, and that support and encouragement leads to empowerment for women and their children.
