Endometriosis is a gynecological disorder that impacts many women throughout their life. Acupuncture is an alternative medicine, in which needles are inserted into the skin at specific points along the body and they are thought to restore the flow of Ch'i through the meridians of the body, that is thought to relieve the pain caused by endometriosis. Many researchers do not believe that acupuncture is anything more than a placebo, although acupuncturists hold strong to their claim that it cures many diseases and alleviates symptoms of many others. This research reviews and evaluates five studies including a 2006 case study, a pilot study (2009), a 2009 review of acupuncture and herbal medicine for treating gynecological disorders, a 2010 clinical trial, and a Cochrane Collaboration systematic review (2011). When critically evaluated the literature shows that although the studies report evidence supporting the use of acupuncture to treat the pain caused by endometriosis, there are not enough large scale studies to provide reliable evidence.
