This research questions whether mycorrhizal fungi populations could potentially reduce fertilizer use in southern Oregon agricultural production due to its ability to promote the uptake by plants of certain nutrients in the soil. This type of fungi has been known to form beneficial symbiotic relationships with plants that allow the plant to absorb more phosphorous and nitrogen than it otherwise could. Excessive use of fertilizers in agriculture has certain undesirable effects on soil and water quality and by supplementing use of fertilizer with the establishment of mycorrhizal fungi, the use of these fertilizers could potentially be reduced without sacrificing crop yield or health.
