The children in the rural Smith River community are "at risk". The health, emotional wellness and education of diverse populations served by Howonquet Head start are in jeopardy. As an advocate during my internship at the Head start, avenues for promoting the physical, emotional and spiritual healing of children and their families were actively pursued and implemented. The garden space was utilized as an outdoor extension for the enhancement of the early learning experience. In doing such, sustainability, environmental resources, mathematical, scientific and literacy concepts were integrated. Art activity was infused into the gardening project to serve as a therapeutic outlet. Healthy lifestyle choices, nutrition and physical fitness components were intertwined within the project by networking with community partners such as the National Park Services, and a locally based program called the Nutrition Network as I became a liasion between these and the school. Parent involvement was solicited as well, to further advocate for health and wellness among families. Grant funding is being further pursued into order to continue the development of the garden space as a permanent extension to the learning environment, and we are currently waiting for a response to the grant application I have submitted.
