Stereotypes occur all the time, and people are constantly feeling the effects of them in every-day life. With stereotypes comes stereotype threat: feeling pressured about confirming stereotypes about one's group, resulting in actually confirming the stereotype. How does this relate to ageism and the stereotypes about short term memory? To more fully understand these concepts, S.O.U. students and faculty tested participants with a number-related short term memory task. Participants were told one of three things: older people perform poorly on these tasks, younger people perform more poorly, or all ages perform about the same on these tasks. I expect to find a significant statistical difference in participants' performance on the task, depending on the stereotype given before the test. The implications could be applied to ageism in the workplace and decreased performance due to stereotype threat.
