Read to Feed

Marissa Morris

Today's student population has a striking decrease of motivation in the classroom. That is why my project focuses on finding appropriate motivational tactics for children with a focus on reading. Working alongside Heifer International I implemented a reading incentive program titled Read to Feed, at Walker Elementary School in Ashland. I work in a resource room where a majority of my responsibilities involves conducting reading intervention, I have seen firsthand the need for children and families to spend more time reading together. Read to Feed motivates students to read more on their own while giving them an opportunity to learn about and participate in philanthropy. Through this project I gained insights into what motivates children and how to do so using appropriate and effective practices. Also, I learned about what it takes to implement a successful program in a school full of diverse learners and faculty. Furthermore, no two classrooms will be the same and not every child will be motivated by the same thing. That is why choice is an intricate part of the Read to Feed program; by giving students choices they are empowering them to take control of their own learning.
