Genetic Problems in Purebred Dogs

Amber Traver

Many people are unaware of the problems that pure breeding dogs are causing. Keeping the "genes pure" is causing numerous health problems amongst purebred dogs. Some of these problems include, heart failure, brittle bones, tumors, predisposition to cancer, skin disease, and hip dysplasia. These are only a few of the issues surrounding pure breeding. Breeding dogs with only other dogs that have very similar genes is comparable to humans inbreeding. Although it does not create the same terrible consequences, it gives us an idea of what we are doing to these dogs. If people were more informed of the harm pure breeding is inflicting on these animals, maybe they would be less inclined to seek out pure bred dogs.
