Survey of Food Deserts in Medford, Oregon

Kevin Moore

A new term has been used recently to describe the plight of inner city residents that have to travel long distances to grocery stores. This term is "food deserts." There are a variety of reasons why grocery stores either move, close, or choose to not locate in the inner city which will be discussed in detail, but for regions like Jackson County, there appears to be food deserts here also. Jackson County does not have any traditional inner cities within in its borders, and most cities like Ashland, Phoenix, and Talent appear to be well covered. However, Medford with its population of over 50,000 may in fact have food deserts within its city limits. So the question is: Does Medford have food deserts within its borders? Where are they?
