Childcare practitioners are often overlooked in our society. While many other first-world countries are supporting the creation of childcare programs that focus on the personal and mental growth of the students by providing educated and well-trained staff, we ignore the importance of training, educating, and supporting the adults who care for our children. To help with this in my community, I created a free training seminar for the local YMCA childcare staff. For three months, I worked with the staff and students of the Ashland YMCA. Then I created an interactive, collaboration based seminar. This seminar focused on the importance of their jobs, and gave them feedback on their questions and concerns, while providing ways to be more supportive to their students. Also, it gave them an opportunity to discuss with their supervisor what support they need. This experience taught me the many frustrations and obstacles faced by childcare practitioners. Though they feel overlooked and unsupported, they all show enthusiasm for becoming more educated role models for their students. Better support and training of childcare professionals will create an atmosphere of support for students outside of school. These adults have the desire to do so but lack the resources.
