Social and emotional skills are imperative if learning is to occur. The Family Nurturing Center in Medford, Oregon provides early intervention in helping preschool aged children, and their families, to develop and maintain positive relationships. The center understands that young children's social and emotional development is largely dependent on the emotional well-being of his or her parents, so effort is placed on creating life-skills classes, home visits and psychological support for the parents or caregivers. The children attending the center have a mindset of fight or flight, preventing necessary skills from forming. Knowing the background of the children, I have planned and implemented a social and emotional lesson that will help them to understand and build upon their own abilities. Since academic achievement is tied closely to the social and emotional welfare of the student, my lesson is used to model appropriate behaviors in various life situations. I want to empower the students to take control of their environment with the aid of self-regulation charts, where they can translate what they experience into information they can use to adjust their thoughts, emotions and behaviors in healthy ways.
