Hearts With A Mission Spring Break 2013

Homeless and at-risk youth do not receive the same opportunities and fun experiences as their peers outside of school hours. It is important for youth to have the opportunity to create memorable experiences despite their family and living background because it can help them build connections and relationships that may benefit them in the near future. For my Community Based Learning Project I coordinated memorable and educational activities for the youth that reside at Hearts With A Mission (HWAM) shelter. During Spring Break 2013, I participated in several activities along with staff and youth from HWAM which included hiking, games, park visits in Medford, karaoke at Yogurt Hut, and going to the movie theater. The youth also had the opportunity to tour the Oregon Vortex and Sanctuary One Animal Farm. I have learned that planning and implementing an itinerary for the youth's spring break requires an endless amount of communication and flexibility. The activities I organized allowed the youth to step out of their comfort zones and try new things while creating awareness of the organization. It allowed them to explore future options such as interning at Sanctuary One when they graduate high school. Other programs should follow suit.
