Community Clean-Up and Planting

Alyssa Hooper

Community service is important for children to be able to learn responsibility and empathy for others. The purpose of my project was to give back to my community at Jacksonville Elementary and educate students about nature and community service. For my Community-Based Learning Project, I volunteered and designed a gardening unit with the third grade classrooms. Then we spent a day cleaning out two large garden beds and replanting them. We also walked around the school grounds planting flowers and picking up trash. This project helped prepare me for teaching and working with a diverse group of students. I learned how to take a meaningful lesson and bring the students outdoors. I developed confidence in my ability to teach students and collaborate with their families. This project is very positive for students because it shows the importance of giving to their community, while also strengthening the bond between students and parents. I would recommend for myself and others to step out of the school setting and give back to their community.
