Parents are the first teachers children have and it is vital to continue that role as their children grow, especially when learning to read. At Walker Elementary school I planned and implemented a family reading night for kindergarten and first grade families to encourage parents to get involved. The night included exercises, games, examples, and resources to help parent's practice literacy skills with their children at home. The night demonstrated that parents are eager to learn new methods for practicing literacy with their children. The implications show that parents want to be involved but many do not have the resources to effectively do so. This all goes to show that strong family, school, and community relationships are necessary for students to receive the best education possible.
