Special Olympics of Southern Oregon is a non-profit organization that offers training and competition experiences in fourteen Olympic style sports. This organization caters to both children and adults with intellectual disabilities giving them the opportunity to compete, socialize with others, and most importantly have fun. The vision of Special Olympics is to help bring awareness to the culture of people with special needs. This organization advocates bringing people with intellectual disabilities into the larger society where they can be accepted, respected, and given equal opportunities to be successful. Partnering with Special Olympics, the volunteer acted as a first time head coach of the first ever youth basketball team for the Medford Special Olympics program. The team consisted of four, eight to eleven year old, boys and girls all of whom had differing abilities. The volunteer had a multitude of responsibilities including; collaborating with parents and other volunteers, coordinating and coaching practices, and participating in other local charity events. The culmination of weeks of practicing led to the State Tournament in which over thirty Special Olympic teams from neighboring counties competed. The all-day tournament showcased the awe-inspiring talent and personal growth of all of the competing athletes.
