Nutritional diets have a profound effect on school-aged children in regards to their health, learning ability, and education. It is known a child's diet affects his or her ability to learn and perform well in school. Teaching nutrition is the key to changing students eating habits and setting them up for the success of choosing the best foods. By providing healthier snacks to students we promote better eating habits and encourage a lifetime of wellness. This project is a pilot program, Healthy Snack of the Week, focused on providing healthy snacks, and teaching students the importance of health and nourishing your body with good foods. Every week during an after-school program, healthy snacks were provided to children along with information they could read, interact with, and take home to their families. A discussion on healthy food choices happened as the children were preparing and enjoying their snacks. When provided with healthy snacks and fun, informational resources; students became excited about nutrition and eager to make the right choices. Encouraging nutritional diets in children at a young age, will help them to develop better eating habits that will likely continue throughout their lives and will decrease their risk for chronic diseases.
