We Make Smart Moves: Empathy Development and Bullying Prevention Strategies for Young Children

Kaila Rants

The best way to prevent bullying is to start at the root of the problem. Bullying occurs, in part, because the instigators do not understand how their words and actions impact others. The key to reversing this trend is empathy development. Students at the Boys and Girls Club in Talent, Oregon had the opportunity to learn empathy development along with many strategies to prevent bullying through a series or games, stories, and discussions in a program called SmartMoves. The goals of the sessions were to guide them towards being more empathetic, tolerant, and empowered to stand up for themselves and others. Each week the group met for 45 minutes to discuss their ideas and complete an activity related to bullying prevention. In the end, the children created a book to show what they had learned. This kind of instruction has the potential to have a national impact, putting an end to one of the biggest problems children face today. If we work together to encourage a new generation of empathetic, compassionate humans, the world will truly be a happier place.
