Dancing Bachata from The Dominican Republic to America

Yahaira Padilla

The main point on my presentation is to express and show the different ways the dance form evolved from the Dominican Republic. In the Dominican Republic speed, quick steps and emotion are the three main qualities of the Bachata dance. When Bachata is performed in America the main focus is on a slower pace, basic movements, and lust. The one element that is common in both countries is the basic beat of the music, speeds change but the basic movement does not. The basics to the dance are three-step with a hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat. The knees should be slightly bent so the performer can sway the hips easier. Generally, most of the dancer's movement is in the lower body up to the hips, and the upper body moves much less. Bachata has been well represented and shown all over the world, but the importance of representation and honor of traditions in the Dominican Republic change when the form is danced in America.
