The Evolution of Speech Recognition

Michel Knowles

The rapid advancement of computer systems hardware technology is now capable of Speech Recognition, also known as "natural speech recognition", which is capable of controlling an individual computer workstation or controlling a U.S. Air Force fighter jet. With this level of technology, both hardware and software, the disabled population will be able to become productive members of the workforce with relative ease. As a disabled computer science student at Southern Oregon University, I wanted to explore what was arguably the best option at the time, "Dragon Naturally Speaking" by Nuance. I determined that Microsoft's Speech Recognition, standard on Windows 7 and 8, was the newest direct competitor. I compared the recommended training documentation for each application and concluded that a consistent methodology for the training and testing would be used. Systematically, I learned the capabilities of each Speech Recognition platform. Dragon was the quickest to train and most user friendly while Microsoft's Speech Recognition was the more time consuming in the training, especially in the technical terminology. However, the automatic integration with all of Microsoft's software applications was quite an advantage over Dragon's structured tiered price plan for additional functionality.
