Can Meditation Improve Sense of Control?

Brenton Bilyeu

When we desire a certain outcome in life, do we feel that we are in control of making it happen or do we believe that external forces will determine our success? How we answer this question determines our Locus of Control (LOC). Many positive qualities have been correlated with a belief that we are in control of outcomes (internal LOC), while having the belief that external forces control outcomes has proven to be related to mental distress (i.e. depression, suicide, etc.). We were interested in determining if meditation improves LOC. An online survey was given to participants of local meditation groups and students of Southern Oregon University. Results indicate that not only does meditation significantly correlate with a healthier LOC, but the more meditation experience, the better.
