Effects of Technology Use in the Classroom on Students' Learning

Helisia Lewis

Recent increases in technology use by students have caused a significant change in classroom communication. Both benefits and challenges accompany increased use of technology. Among the benefits are access to research and information, while drawbacks include the ease in which plagiarism can occur and distractions, such as cellular phone use in class. To reestablish communication, changes need to occur through different teaching and learning styles because of the many influences on focus that technology has, and these styles will need to be adjusted to changes in communication. To further understand this need for change, this research project is a literature review of empirical research published within the 2000's, which focuses on studies relating to the effects of the utilization of various forms of technology in the teaching environment in relationship to impact on students' learning. The findings of this research indicate different teaching styles are necessary in order to remain up-to-date with communication, as well as to stay caught up with the changing technologies. The role of the educator has to adapt to the change in dynamics from the technology in the classroom.
