Both theater students and writing students have pursued dramatic writing as an area of interest and talent. However, there is no platform for these students to work-shop, rehearse, and present their pieces. Regional theaters across the world commission playwrights to write original plays, and often the commissioned playwright will go through a series of work-shops, and a staged reading of their script before a fully realized production. As my capstone I am creating a platform for SOU students to go through a similar process, as commissioned playwrights. A crucial component of this process is the staged reading, where writers can hear their words come alive, and have an audience. During SOAR I will present a staged reading of three student one-act plays (1 1/2 hours). The students are as followed: Gabriella Mingoia (myself), Nick Altishin, and Stephanie Neuerburg. The staged reading will be directed by Marc Oliver. The intention of this staged reading is to create a platform and opportunity for developing dramatic writers at SOU. Additional to the SOAR performance, I will be compiling a binder of resources, submission process, and copies of all the one-acts in hopes the theater department continues to annually offer a "New Works Festival".
