The island of Zanzibar, located in Eastern Africa, represents a community strongly influenced by Arabic culture from Iran. The people of Zanzibar experience life very differently then we do in the U.S. The economy circulates around fishing and agriculture, Swahili is the dominantly spoken language, and Islam is a commonly practiced religion. Zanzibar is home to a diverse culture rich in tradition. However, when explored on a deeper level Zanzibar struggles with dark social issues. Women are treated poorly especially by men as they are seen in a sexualized and degrading way. The research focuses on the practice of tribal belly dance and the way that the practice objectifies women. Healing needs to take place in this part of the world to empower women through education, outreach, and fellowship that can demonstrate healthy relationships and a strong personal image.
