Patient satisfaction surveys at Providence Medford Medical Center (PMMC) have shown that there is a lack of patient understanding related to the relationship between comfort and pain management. Patients seemed to be equating comfort with the absence of pain resulting in a negative experience in the peri-operative setting as evidenced by the dissatisfaction ratings on patient discharge surveys. It was determined that Kolcaba's (1994) comfort theory would be used in the PMMC vision for comfort care in conjunction with the Oregon Practice Guidelines. This project was designed to provide peri-operative patient education regarding comfort with the intended outcome of increasing patient satisfaction, improving the peri-operative experience and promoting healing. Project implementation involved the development of a patient education video to promote the idea of comfort care and its relationship to pain management. The education will be delivered to patients at their pre-anesthesia appointments. Evaluation strategies are discussed.
