We will be performing 4 Saxes by Carleton Macy (b. 1944) and Grand Quatuor Concertant Op. 79 by J.B. Singelee. Having been written in recent years (1988), this piece was very influenced by popular culture. Carleton Macy uses stylistic characteristics of "jazz" and "R and B" in movements 2 and 5. The rhythmic complexity and style keeps the listener very engaged. Jean Baptiste Singelee (1812-1875) was one of the first composers to write for saxophones. This piece is very melodic and features every saxophone in some way. Even though these two pieces were written over 100 years apart, they are very exciting to listen to and play. They show off the dynamic style and technique of the saxophone.
