The purpose of this action research project is to expand my knowledge of and increase my repertoire and effectiveness in teaching students to use movement associated with various concepts being taught. The purpose of using associated movement is to increase students' retention of instructional content. Participants in this project included eight teachers in Southern Oregon with teaching experience varying from seven to forty years. Participants were interviewed by me individually and were observed teaching in their normal classroom settings. Key measures included these interviews and observations, together with videotaped sessions of me teaching and using associated movement in lessons I presented. Important findings included determining those subjects in which associated movement is most effective, and the acquisition of specific examples of effective usage of associated movement within various subjects. The implications of these findings are increased usage of associated movement in my lessons, and increased student retention and attention.
