The purpose of the study was to measure the effects of listening to audiobooks as compared to reading printed text on reading comprehension and fluency. Reading fluency and comprehension are important for academic success. The participants in this study were 27 third graders ages eight and nine years old with a wide range of reading abilities and reading ranges. The participants were divided into two groups, A and B. Each group was responsible for either listening or reading only. The study involved four measures that assessed reading comprehension and fluency. The measures included Easy CBM, Star Reading, comprehension questions, and dibels. The study indicates that while reading has a greater effect on reading comprehension, listening has a greater effect on reading fluency. However, both reading and listening are beneficial to improving literacy.
